BYD India is preparing to introduce the eMax 7, an all-electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), on October 8, as a replacement to the BYD e6 electric MPV. The launch of the eMax 7 is expected to strengthen BYD's presence in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, particularly in the MPV segment, where it will compete directly with hybrid options like the Toyota Innova HyCross and Maruti Suzuki Invicto.
One of the most significant changes in the eMax 7 compared to its predecessor is the inclusion of a third row of seating. While the e6 was a five-seater, the eMax 7 will be available in both 6- and 7-seater configurations, increasing its appeal to families and fleet operators seeking more passenger capacity. Despite the additional seating reducing the vehicle's cargo space, BYD has upgraded the seating materials from fabric upholstery to a more luxurious leatherette finish, enhancing the overall interior quality.
The eMax 7’s direct competitors, such as the Toyota Innova HyCross and Maruti Suzuki Invicto, also offer similar multi-seat configurations, though they are slightly larger. However, unlike these models, which rely on hybrid powertrains, the eMax 7 is a fully electric vehicle, offering a distinct option for environmentally conscious consumers.
BYD has equipped the eMax 7 with several standout features to differentiate it from its competitors. A key highlight is the brand’s signature 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen, a feature popularised in the earlier e6 model. The infotainment system, coupled with a fixed panoramic glass roof, aims to enhance the driving and passenger experience.
The interior has undergone a significant redesign, with faux wood and aluminium inserts on the centre console and dashboard, as well as more premium-looking switchgear and soft-touch materials. Additionally, the eMax 7 will come equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), positioning it as a technologically advanced option in the segment.
Internationally, the BYD eMax 7 is offered with two battery options: a 55.4 kWh battery that delivers a range of up to 420 km, and a larger 71.8 kWh battery with an extended range of 530 km. The smaller battery generates 161 bhp, while the larger battery produces 201 bhp, with both variants delivering 310 Nm of torque, a significant improvement over the e6’s performance (94 bhp and 180 Nm).
For the Indian market, BYD already provides the 71.8 kWh battery in the e6, and, likely, this larger battery will also be available for the eMax 7. However, there is no confirmation on whether the smaller 55.4 kWh battery option will be introduced in India. Offering a more affordable, smaller-battery variant could expand the eMax 7’s appeal, particularly for buyers concerned about cost and range anxiety.
The BYD eMax 7 is expected to be priced between ₹30 lakh and ₹33 lakh (ex-showroom, India), representing only a modest increase over the current e6, which is priced at ₹29.15 lakh. This pricing will put the eMax 7 in direct competition with the Toyota Innova HyCross, whose top-spec ZX (O) hybrid variant is priced at ₹30.98 lakh.
