CATL Unveils Shenxing Gen 3 EV Battery with 6-Minute Full Charge

CATL has unveiled its latest battery technology, the Shenxing third-generation battery, at its Tech Day event, claiming a full charge time of just over six minutes.

The new battery delivers significantly faster charging speeds, with the ability to charge from 10 to 35% in one minute, 10 to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds, and up to 98% in 6 minutes 27 seconds. Even in extreme conditions, the battery can reach 98 percent charge in nine minutes at temperatures as low as -30°C.

A key factor behind this performance is its ultra-low internal resistance of 0.25 milliohms, which is about 50% lower than the industry average. The battery incorporates several innovations, including a cell shoulder cooling system that improves thermal efficiency, precise multi-point temperature monitoring for better control, and self-heating technology that enables fast charging in low temperatures.

CATL claims the battery retains over 90% of its health even after 1,000 ultra-fast charging cycles. The self-heating system allows rapid temperature increase without the need for specialised charging infrastructure, addressing one of the major challenges associated with EV charging in cold climates.

Alongside the battery, CATL also introduced an integrated ultra-charging and battery swap solution. This allows users to either fast-charge or swap batteries depending on conditions, offering greater flexibility, particularly in extreme weather.
