Changan Automobiles’s subsidiary has successfully developed a detachable Power Turbine Generator that converts fuel into electricity to extend range without modifying the EV’s core structure.
Chinese automaker Changan Automobile, through its subsidiary Hunan Tyen, has revealed a detachable Power Turbine Generator (PTG), aimed at addressing one of the most persistent challenges facing battery electric vehicles: range anxiety.
Despite the rapid growth of the EV sector, limitations such as reduced performance in cold climates, higher energy consumption at highway speeds, and charging accessibility continue to impact user confidence.
Positioned as a modular auxiliary power solution, the PTG converts fuel into electricity to extend driving range without requiring structural modifications to existing electric vehicles. Its detachable architecture enables flexible deployment, allowing users to supplement energy when needed.
The system features a compact design, improved power density, and broad fuel compatibility. Leveraging advanced fluid machinery engineering and three-dimensional turbulence simulations, the company optimised compressor and turbine performance. Innovations including a high-efficiency bearing system and enhanced compressor and turbine components have improved turbine efficiency by more than five percent.
Thermal stability was addressed through a redesigned electronic control unit incorporating advanced cooling channel structures and precision thermal management to ensure reliable operation under high-load conditions.
Beyond automotive use, the PTG could support applications such as drone propulsion and mobile outdoor equipment.
The concept draws parallels with aftermarket solutions previously explored by some Tesla owners who added range extenders to their vehicles. However, this factory-developed system aims to offer a more integrated and scalable approach by enabling battery electric vehicles to operate similarly to extended-range hybrids when required.
