Delhi has extended the deadline for its EV policy, providing additional time for thorough public consultations prior to the introduction of a new policy.
The Delhi government has prolonged its existing Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy until March 31, 2026, or until a new policy is announced, whichever comes first, officials confirmed.
The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday.
Introduced in 2020, the Delhi EV Policy lapsed in August 2023 but has seen several renewals. Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh stressed the need for extensive consultations to craft a robust, inclusive EV framework for the future.
Singh outlined plans for wide-ranging discussions with stakeholders—citizens, industry experts, environmental bodies, and public-private entities.
These talks will prioritise improving EV charging networks, reassessing subsidies and incentives, setting up effective e-waste and battery disposal systems, and clarifying roles in Delhi’s growing EV landscape.
The upcoming policy will support the government’s ‘Green Delhi’ initiative, aiming to make the capital a leader in sustainable urban transport, according to officials.
Singh highlighted upcoming provisions to boost EV adoption, enhance charging facilities, encourage innovation, and ensure environmental responsibility.
The cabinet reviewed a draft on April 15, which proposed phasing out CNG auto-rickshaws and fossil fuel two-wheelers within two years.
It also suggested a full EV transition in three years, replacing CNG three-wheelers with electric ones by August 2025 and banning petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheeler registrations after August 15, 2026. However, these proposals were not approved.
The revised policy may retain subsidies for EVs priced under ₹25 lakh, encouraging manufacturers to offer affordable options, Singh added. This move aims to broaden access to electric vehicles amid Delhi’s push for cleaner mobility.
