Bajaj

Here’s the real-world tested fuel efficiency of the world’s first CNG bike.

Bajaj claimed that the running cost of the Freedom 125 CNG would be half of an equivalent petrol 125 cc motorcycle. It also received an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 102 km/kg in CNG mode and 65 kmpl in petrol mode. However, what can be expected in the real-world scenarios? Here are our test results:

Test Results

City Fuel Efficiency (45-50kmph)

104.6 km/kg

Highway Fuel Efficiency (65-70kmph)

100 km/kg

Petrol Fuel Efficiency

52.6 kmpl

Mind you, the test was conducted by a heavy 100 kg rider, who is not the ideal weight to do such fuel efficiency tests. Despite that, such numbers are phenomenal. A commuter with average weight can expect to easily cover 210-215 km on one full CNG tank. And couple that with the small 2-litre petrol tank, the range figure shoots up to over 320 km.

What is more keen to note is that the running cost thus comes to ₹0.84/km in Pune, while it is ₹1.50-₹1.60/km for a corresponding 125 cc motorcycle like the Honda Shine 125. If you live in Mumbai or Ahmedabad, the running costs would be almost ₹0.70-₹0.75/km. Since the bike is first going to be only sold in Maharashtra and Gujarat, we have factored in CNG rates of these three cities.
