The Desmo450 MX is the first among many off-road models that Ducati plans to produce in the next few years.
Ducati announced to the world last year that the brand is planning on making a range of off-road focused motorcycles over the next few years. As part of that itinerary, Ducati also formed a whole new racing division called Ducati Corse Off-road, and now this division has revealed the all-new Desmo450 MX motocross prototype, the first of its kind from the Italian manufacturer.
Although this is not the first ‘Desmo450’ from the manufacturer, Ducati had a street model back in the 1970s with the same name. However, the technology wasn’t quite as sophisticated as it is now.
This is a proper Ducati and that deep red paint will give it away in an instant. The feeling is further accentuated by sporty stickers and graphics. The ‘Desmo450’ decals with red fork covers and a cool colour-matched saddle makes this bike look iconic all the more.
The technical specifications of the Desmo450 MX have not been revealed as of yet. However, we can make an educated guess from the name about the bike’s engine displacement and that it will feature the brand’s iconoclast ‘Desmo’ valves. Aside from that, we can also figure out from images about the bike’s underpinnings. There’s a new aluminium frame chassis paired to a aluminium steel frame with a Showa-sourced fully adjustable suspension at both ends.
Given its segment of competition, the Desmo450 MX will have specifications at the current level of the established competition. So, if we take the class leader KTM into consideration, the Desmo450 MX will have a single-cylinder, 450cc engine that will be good for 70 bhp, and weigh around 105 kg (wet). Additionally, the Desmo450 MX is expected to have all the necessary features commonly found in bikes in this competition, which includes the traction control, quickshifter, launch control, and dedicated engine maps.
Yes, the new Desmo450 MX will also hit the production line and enter the mass market for competition use only. Ducati will debut the race-spec Desmo450 MX at the upcoming Italian Motocross Championship, with the legendary Antonio Cairoli piloting the steed, which is scheduled to take place this March. This will allow the company to accumulate as much data as possible about the bike’s performance, which will further help them to develop the bike before it finally hits production in the second half of 2025.
