ePlane Company’s 60,000 sq. ft. site will support full-scale development and future production of the e200X air taxi while advancing certification efforts.
India’s electric aviation ambitions have taken a major step forward with The ePlane Company inaugurating a new integrated prototyping and testing facility at the IIT Madras Discovery Campus in Thaiyur. Spanning 60,000 sq. ft., the facility is being positioned as the country’s largest hub dedicated to the development and future serial production of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft.
The new site marks a transition from early-stage lab experimentation to industrial-scale manufacturing readiness. It will support the full-scale development of the company’s e200X air taxi, including design integration, subsystem testing, composite fabrication, avionics validation, and electric powertrain assembly. A dedicated Ground Test Vehicle unit will also enable validation of key systems as the company advances toward certification.
The facility was inaugurated by Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, whose leadership has helped establish the Discovery Campus as a hub for deep-tech innovation. The site is expected to play a critical role in supporting tethered hover testing and other milestones required for regulatory approval in collaboration with India’s aviation authorities.
At the centre of the company’s plans is the e200X, designed specifically for dense urban environments. Beyond passenger mobility, the company’s initial commercial deployment strategy will focus on air ambulance services. This approach is intended to dramatically reduce emergency medical transport times across Indian cities.
The new facility also underscores the broader role of IIT Madras in nurturing advanced aerospace innovation. Through its incubation ecosystem, the institute has provided infrastructure, specialised talent, and academic validation support that have helped the company move from concept stage to certification-ready development.
In related news, China highlighted its growing eVTOL capabilities in Wuhan with a multi-aircraft demonstration showcasing passenger, logistics, medical, and personal air mobility solutions. As 2026 emerges as a decisive year for commercial rollout, regulatory support and infrastructure development are accelerating the country’s push towards a scalable low-altitude aviation ecosystem.
