The second generation of the KTM 390 Adventure is completely new from the ground up.
And it’s here finally! The new range of KTM 390 Adventure R has finally broken cover. Ushering in a whole new dimension to adventure touring in the sub-400 cc segment, the new range of KTM 390 Adventure bikes are lighter, quicker, and more powerful than the first-generation ADVs.
Not that this surprises us anymore, for test mules of the new KTM 390 Adventure R were spotted several times before. We were already impressed by its Dakar rally-esque stance, right from that new rally tower design to that minimal, sleek tail.
The new bike should be quite capable in off-road conditions, and those fully adjustable, the raised USD fork and monoshock further help reinstate that confidence. The suspension units are fully adjustable on the R variant with 230 mm of travel Seat height is pretty tall at 860 mm. Lastly, proper block-pattern tyres shod around spoke wheels (sadly non tubeless) will leave no doubts about the bike’s dual purpose. As for its chassis, while the trellis architecture continues, the sub-frame has been redesigned, and in a typical KTM fashion, the overall frame has become lighter than the outgoing model.
Nestled inside the new frame is the same 399 cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled mill from the current-gen KTM 390 Duke. This engine is good for 45.3 bhp and 39 Nm, and it comes paired with a 6-speed gearbox and a bi-directional quickshifter. So, while the output figures might remain the same in the adventure bike, we might see a change in the final drive or gearing ratios, to suit the 390 Adventure R’s character.
The KTM 390 Adventure R will carry forward the same 5-inch TFT cluster from the current-gen Dukes. A bunch of new features have been added to the mix. One of the most noteworthy of them all is the availability of cruise control as standard. This will make the upcoming 390 Adventure R, the first sub-400 cc KTM to be offered with this feature. Then there’s multiple riding modes, traction control and cornering ABS.
In addition to that, the usual plethora of smartphone connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, headset connectivity, etc. features continue here with the adventure bike as well.
The KTM 390 Adventure R is expected to command a slightly higher price than the current-gen 390 Adventure given the kind of updates it has received. We estimate that prices will start around ₹3.50 lakh (ex-showroom) for the 390 Adventure R and it could go on sale in India by early 2025.
