Musk-owned Tesla and Starlink are eyeing an entry into the Indian market
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk met in Washington and discussed issues related to space, mobility, technology and innovation. PM Modi said on X, “Had a very good meeting with @elonmusk in Washington DC. We discussed various issues, including those he is passionate about such as space, mobility, technology and innovation. I talked about India’s efforts towards reform and furthering ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance.’
While there have been no comments made on what was discussed, Tesla and Starlink’s entry into India, could have been some of the points of discussion. Tesla has been waiting to get into the Indian market, but has always backed out stating the tax structure issues in the country. In December 2024, as reported by ET Auto, Tesla was looking for showroom space in the national capital.
Earlier in 2024, the meeting between PM Modi and Musk was called off at the last minute, thereby, putting to rest any hopes of Tesla coming to India. Questions remain regarding Tesla's approach to vehicle imports, whether at the 100% tax rate or under India's new policy allowing certain EVs at 15% import duty.
For now, there is no official word on Tesla’s entry into the Indian market, so yet again it’s a wait and watch game for us.
