Elon Musk has hinted at a new Tesla vehicle with higher passenger capacity, describing it as “cooler than a minivan,” though details and timelines remain unclear.

Tesla could be working on a new vehicle aimed at carrying more passengers, with CEO Elon Musk hinting at something “cooler than a minivan” in response to user queries online.

The comment comes amid ongoing discussions around Tesla’s future product strategy, as the company shifts focus toward autonomous mobility and transportation services. This shift has already led to a slowdown in new vehicle programmes, with Tesla currently operating a reduced lineup compared to its earlier expansion plans.

The idea of a high-capacity Tesla vehicle is not new. In its earlier long-term roadmap, the company had outlined plans to develop vehicles for high passenger-density urban transport, alongside heavy-duty trucks. While Tesla eventually introduced the Semi, a dedicated people mover has yet to materialise.

Over the years, Musk has floated multiple ideas in this space, including a minibus based on the Model X and even a potential collaboration with Mercedes-Benz for an electric van. However, none of these concepts progressed to production. Tesla’s tunnel transport venture has also relied on existing models rather than purpose-built vehicles.

More recently, Musk suggested that the Cybertruck could serve as a family vehicle due to its seating configuration, though the idea received mixed reactions. In response to calls for a more practical people carrier, Musk stated that a more compelling alternative to a traditional minivan is in the works, without sharing further details.

While the teaser has sparked speculation, Tesla’s track record with similar announcements suggests that timelines and execution remain uncertain.

Musk could be talking about the new Tesla Model Y L (long-wheelbase), which is a 3-row electric SUV specifically designed to seat 6 people. It features a 2–2–2 configuration, utilising individual captain's chairs in the second row instead of a bench. But the Model Y L is based on an existing product and is already on sale in many markets outside the USA.
