The Optimus Bot has been in development since 2021.
Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk has shared a video of the Optimus humanoid bot that Tesla has been developing for the last couple of years. In a new video, the Optimus is seen just walking in a limp way, which is nothing new. Notably, the video, which was originally posted, was very pixelated and grainy. The video shows the humanoid bot walking on the Tesla factory floor. The only impressive thing about this video was that, for the first time, the bot was seen walking unassisted for 1 minute and 18 seconds. Later, strangely, the video was replaced with a higher resolution one, but the post didn’t show an edited tweet tag, which begs the question about Musk’s posts not showing that sign.
“Optimus strolling around the lab,” wrote Tesla CEO Elon Musk while sharing the video on his social media platform X, where it has been viewed over 10 million times.
Tesla has been using its autonomous driving car technology for the humanoid. Musk has also revealed in the past that it trains the algorithms for the bot using the Dojo supercomputer, which has been built in-house. This comes after a video was shared by Musk which showed the bot folding a shirt. Musk has often said that his bot could enable humans to do more by taking over menial tasks. Last year, the bot was also seen doing namaste.

"Important note: Optimus cannot yet do this autonomously, but certainly will be able to do this fully autonomously and in an arbitrary environment (won't require a fixed table with a box that has only one shirt),” the world’s second richest man had posted last month.
The Optimus bot was first unveiled at Tesla’s AI day event in 2021. While it has made progress, it is not in the same league as Atlas by Boston Dynamics, which learned to pick itself up in 2016 and by 2017 was doing backflips, and in 2018 could also do parkour style jumping. Last year, Atlas was seen manipulating its environment to navigate complex worksites.
But price points for these bots are also different. Atlas can cost up to $250,000 while Musk aims to offer Optimus for $20,000.
