Elon Musk, best known for his leadership roles at Tesla, SpaceX, and X, has announced a significant milestone for his brain-chip venture, Neuralink. The company has successfully implanted its neural chip in a human patient. This follows the approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct the first human trials. Neuralink had been actively seeking volunteers for chip implantation. Musk shared that the patient is recovering well and initial tests indicate promising neuron spike detection.
Musk tweeted, "The first human received an implant from @Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well. Initial results show promising neuron spike detection." This announcement comes shortly after Musk lost the title of the world's richest man to Bernard Arnault.
He further stated that the first product, named 'Telepathy', would enable humans to control their phones or computers merely through thought. "Enables control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking. Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs. Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal," Musk elaborated in a subsequent post.
Previously, Musk has claimed that Neuralink's first product would allow individuals with paralysis to operate smartphones more rapidly using their minds, bypassing the need for thumb usage.
Neuralink has previously conducted animal tests, with Musk sharing videos of monkeys playing the game Pong, controlling the screen solely with their brains. These experiments, however, have faced criticism from animal rights groups like the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
