Mumbai-based Energy in Motion Ltd. (EIM) has announced the inauguration of its new electric heavy-duty commercial vehicle complex at Talegaon in Maharashtra. The Mumbai-based firm will be locally assembling electric heavy-duty vehicles including electric trucks, tractor-trailers, and dumpers. The company said its integrated complex brings together an electric truck vehicle assembly facility, a lithium-ion battery pack assembly factory, and an independent battery testing laboratory. The unified ecosystem aims to streamline manufacturing, battery technology and testing at the complex.

Commenting on the occasion, Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director, EIM Ltd, said, “We are delighted to launch this integrated manufacturing and testing complex in Pune where we will build some of the largest electric vehicles that will ply on India’s roads. This facility was built in record time due to facilitation by Maharashtra govt, full support of all our technology partners, speedy execution by our hosts RMK Spaces and the round-the-clock efforts of EIM’s team lead by our Manufacturing head, Shri Mahesh Keskar. We now focus on building out a nationwide network of megawatt scale charging and battery swapping stations to enable India’s speedy transition from diesel to electric heavy goods transportation.”

The electric heavy-duty commercial vehicle manufacturing complex was developed in just over a year from signing the MoU. The new facility adheres to Industry 4.0 standards, and will have an initial capacity of 5,000 vehicles per annum. EIM says it has invested ₹1,000 crore into the project as part of Phase 1. The company has partnered with several global players to assemble electric heavy trucks in India. EIM has partnered with China-based BAIC Foton for the electric heavy vehicles, which sold over 650,000 units last year. The battery technology comes from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), which holds a 39 per cent share when it comes to battery manufacturing globally. Shanghai Enneagon Energy Technology Co., Ltd. is EIM’s partner for robotic battery swapping systems, and has built over 1600 stations worldwide.

The new complex will create over 2,000 direct and indirect work opportunities across design, R&D and IT. The company says it’s also a nationwide battery swapping and charging infrastructure along major highways, ports and industrial complexes. These megawatt scale hubs will be able to swap batteries of EIM vehicles and other compatible makes in less than 7 minutes. The charging stations will be equipped with DC fast charging BIS standard (CCS-2) sockets, allowing any compatible vehicle to use the chargers.
