According to FADA, festive demand, improving running-cost economics, a wider choice of models were the key drivers amongst others.
Electric passenger vehicle retail sales increased two-fold year-on-year in September to 36,108 units, compared against 18,559 units sold in the same month last year, said the Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA) on Wednesday. Overall electric vehicle retail sales also rose sharply during the month, climbing 74 per cent year-on-year to 3,33,364 units from 1,91,497 units in September 2025.
What Drove EV Sales
According to FADA, festive demand, improving running-cost economics, a wider choice of models and continued policy support through PM E-DRIVE and state-level schemes are the key drivers making electric vehicles a consideration for an increasing number of buyers in the country.
"September delivered the highest-ever monthly EV retail India has recorded 3,33,634 units across categories, up 74% year-on-year, lifting overall EV penetration to about 13% from 10% a year ago," FADA President Sai Giridhar, said in a statement.

Giridhar added that while the broader automobile market benefited from a weak base in September last year, the EV segment recorded an absolute monthly sales record. He added that electric vehicles not only grew compared with the previous year but also reached a new all-time high.
Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Hit New Record
Electric two-wheelers led the growth in the mass market, with retail sales reaching a fresh all-time high of 2,07,314 units in September, up 88 per cent year-on-year. Their penetration rose to 11.6 per cent, according to FADA.
More than one in nine two-wheelers retailed in the month was electric, FADA noted.
"Electric passenger vehicles also set an all-time record at 36,108 units, with penetration rising to 8.5%. Three-wheelers remain structurally electric at 64.9%, and while electric commercial vehicles eased month-on-month, they still grew over 150% year-on-year as fleet electrification deepens," Giridhar further noted.
