The Matter Aera 5000 deliveries commenced this month after many delays.
The electric two-wheeler geography of the Indian market has been dominated by scooters, but Ahmedabad based Matter feels there is a huge market for electric motorcycles as well. Deliveries for the Matter Aera 5000 finally commenced last month after many delays and the brand has set itself a target of delivering 50,000 vehicles by March, 2025. In an exclusive interview with Mohal Lalbhai, CEO & Founder of Matter, it was confirmed that the company is working on a more affordable variant. The Aera 5000 retails between ₹1.74-1.84 lakh (ex-showroom) depending on the variant, which is quite expensive.
For Matter to achieve higher volumes, the price point has to be more accessible and Lalbhai confirmed that a more affordable variant is under development. The upcoming Matter bike will be based on the same platform but will be more affordable. Matter could achieve the same by offering a LCD screen instead of a TFT unit, skip keyless ignition, smaller battery and even the motor output could be reduced. It will be interesting to see whether Matter carries forward its unique 4-speed gearbox or drops it as a cost-cutting measure.
The affordable Matter electric bike is still time away as it’s still in early stages of development, however, more variants of the Aera 5000 are expected to be introduced in 2025. Matter also plans to expand its dealership presence with a target of 50 touchpoints by March, 2025 and the southern states will be in focus.
