Two-wheelers are exempted from toll charges to ease financial pressures on lower-income road users, as well as reduce queues at toll collection points.

The National Highway Authority of India has clarified that toll fees will not be imposed on motorcyclists and scooters, contradicting several media reports stating otherwise. The NHAI also confirmed that it is not even considering a proposal to charge two-wheelers on national highways, and will maintain the current exemption policy as it is.

This response came to light after recent media reports suggested that India’s toll-free highway access for motorcycles and scooters will end on July 15, 2025. Moreover, the two-wheelers will be charged via FASTag at all highway entry points. The Minister of Road, Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, criticised these reports for spreading misinformation without proper verification. He backed up his criticism, stating that “toll exemption for two-wheelers remains in full effect. No changes have been proposed”, the minister tweeted.

Currently, two-wheelers travel for free on national highways, but cannot access express highways such as the Vadodara-Ahmedabad and Mumbai-Pune expressways. This exemption policy was introduced due to its minimal impact on road wear and the infrastructure costs associated with toll collection.

This clarification comes simultaneously after the Government of India introduced its new FASTag annual pass for private cars. This pass will be effective from August 15 onwards, and it promises to cover 200 journeys or one year's travel, whichever expires first, and applies only to non-commercial vehicles, including cars, jeeps and vans. One can activate its FASTag annual pass via the Rajmarg Yatra app and the official NHAI and transport ministry websites.

Additionally, Nitin Gadkar also suggested expanding the application of FASTags to more avenues other than collecting tolls. To know more about it, head to the link here.
