FADA has launched a nationwide campaign to reassure consumers that E20 petrol is safe and compatible with modern vehicles, countering misconceptions regarding fuel efficiency and engine durability.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has launched a nationwide consumer awareness campaign to address concerns surrounding E20 petrol, with dealerships across the country displaying posters, banners and informational material aimed at reassuring customers about the fuel's compatibility with modern vehicles.

The initiative comes as India continues to expand the use of ethanol-blended petrol under its clean mobility strategy. The campaign, which began around 10 days ago, is intended to provide consumers with information on E20 fuel and counter misconceptions surrounding the government's ethanol blending programme.

Dealerships are distributing flyers and displaying notices carrying a consistent message that E20 petrol is safe for compatible vehicles.

According to FADA President C S Vigneshwar, the association waited before launching the outreach programme until the government, oil marketing companies (OMCs) and automobile manufacturers had publicly clarified their positions on E20 fuel.

The educational material now being circulated is based on assurances from the government, OMCs and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), all of whom have stated that the fuel has undergone the necessary testing and is safe for approved vehicles.

Public concerns have largely centred on the possible impact of higher ethanol blends on fuel efficiency and the long-term durability of engine components such as valves.

While some reports have suggested a marginal reduction in fuel economy and raised questions about material compatibility, Vigneshwar said there has so far been little empirical evidence from the field to substantiate these concerns.

To reinforce its position, FADA has also pointed to international experience with higher ethanol blends.

Referring to Brazil's long-standing ethanol programme, Vigneshwar was quoted as saying, "85% blending has been happening for a decade," adding that vehicle manufacturers have already developed technologies capable of operating with significantly higher ethanol content.
