These bikes offer cleaner emissions by using ethanol-blended fuels that can be produced right here in India
The recently concluded Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 buzzed with excitement around sustainable transportation, and a major highlight was the emergence of flex-fuel technology in the two-wheeler segment. Leading manufacturers like Royal Enfield, Bajaj Auto, TVS, Suzuki and Honda showcased their flex-fuel bikes.
The iconic Classic 350 received a flex-fuel version with a colour-scheme makeover. The variant shown was now capable of running on a blend of ethanol up to 85%. This showcased model sported a unique green and red paint scheme. While maintaining its mechanical identity, the flex-fuel Classic 350 offers reduced emissions and potentially lower fuel costs.
Bajaj had the Pulsar N160 Flex and Dominar E27.5, flex-fuel versions of their popular Pulsar N160 and Dominar 400 models. While specific launch dates remain under wraps, these bikes showcase Bajaj's commitment to sustainable mobility. The Dominar E27.5 is running on a 27.5% ethanol blend, similar to its international counterparts, like the ones sold in Brazil.
TVS unveiled a flex-fuel variant of their sporty Raider 125, boasting TVS' Flex Fuel Technology (FFT). This technology allows the bike to run on ethanol blends ranging from E20 to E85, offering impressive flexibility and potentially cleaner emissions. Maintaining its peppy performance and youthful looks, the Raider 125 flex-fuel version caters to eco-conscious riders seeking a fun ride.
Honda showcased India's first flex-fuel two-wheeler, the CB300F Flex, a pre-production model featuring their "Flex Tech" technology. This bike can run on E85 fuel with no changes to the specifications to the engine. There might be better gaskets and hoses involved to handle the ethanol mix and the corrosive nature that comes with it.
Suzuki has been developing a flex-fuel variant of their popular Gixxer 250 SF. This exciting prospect offers eco-conscious riders the chance to embrace sustainability without sacrificing performance. The flex-fuel Gixxer 250 boasts the same 249cc, single-cylinder engine and impressive specs as its BS6 counterpart, ensuring the familiar thrill of the ride.
These developments at the Bharat Mobility Expo signify a promising future for flex-fuel technology in India. With established manufacturers embracing this innovation, we can expect more flex-fuel bikes to hit the roads in the coming years. This shift could contribute significantly to reducing emissions, promoting energy security, and offering riders a more sustainable choice.
