Kia’s popular MPVs will soon gain a CNG powertrain option to help them better compete with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6.

Kia India has officially announced a new CNG powertrain option for its MPVs: Carens and Carens Clavis, which is set to launch soon in the market. The announcement was made alongside the Kia Sorento India launch. Kia also surprised everyone by announcing the Carnival Hybrid in India at the same event.

Anyway, offering the CNG setup on the older Carens allows Kia to strategically target the commercial taxi and fleet market, providing private operators with a more economical running alternative to mainstream competitors like the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.

Under the hood, the CNG setup is derived from the MPV's existing 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Smartstream petrol engine. While the petrol-only mode puts out 113 bhp, running in CNG mode adjusts the performance output to 95 bhp and 123 Nm of peak torque.

By expanding CNG availability across both the pre-facelift Carens and the feature-packed Carens Clavis, Kia is positioning itself to appeal to both cost-conscious commercial buyers and private family owners seeking reduced daily driving expenses. Official launch dates and pricing for the CNG variants are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
