Ford Motor Company has announced a significant safety recall affecting nearly 700,000 vehicles across the US after identifying of a critical fuel system defect that poses fire risks to drivers and passengers, news agency Reuters reported on Wednesday.

The automotive giant is pulling 694,271 vehicles from American roads after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified serious safety concerns. The recall specifically targets 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport models and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles.

Fuel Injector Defects Create Fire Hazards

Federal safety regulators have determined that defective fuel injectors in the affected vehicles may develop cracks, allowing gasoline to leak directly into engine compartments. This fuel leakage significantly elevates fire risks during vehicle operation.

Additionally, Ford has acknowledged that fuel pump malfunctions in these vehicles could "result in an engine stall while driving," creating dangerous situations for motorists.

Expanded Recall

Beyond the fuel leak issue, Ford has also initiated an even larger recall including 850,318 vehicles worldwide, with 844,098 units located in the US, according to NHTSA documentation, Fortune has reported.

The expanded recall includes these popular Ford models:

Ford models:

  • 2021-2023 Bronco
  • 2022 Expedition
  • 2021-2023 Explorer
  • 2021-2022 F-150
  • 2021-2023 F-250 SD
  • 2021-2023 F-350 SD
  • 2021-2023 F-450 SD
  • 2021-2023 F-550 SD
  • 2021-2022 Mustang

Lincoln models:

  • 2021-2023 Lincoln Aviator
  • 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigator

No Immediate Fix Available

Ford currently lacks a definitive solution for the identified safety defects. The company plans to mail initial notification letters to affected vehicle owners beginning July 14, with follow-up correspondence scheduled once engineering teams develop appropriate remedies.
