US automaker rethinks India operations as Trump-era tariffs and EV transition reshape long-term plans.

Ford is reportedly going back to the drawing board to reassess the future of its Chennai manufacturing facility, as shifting global trade policies and a strategic pivot towards electric mobility prompt a comprehensive review of its India operations.

The plant, located in Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai, has been underutilised for several years following Ford’s 2021 decision to discontinue vehicle manufacturing in India. While the facility continues to support engine production and export operations, its long-term role remains uncertain.

Recent reports indicate that the company is evaluating whether to retain, repurpose, or potentially divest the site as part of a broader global restructuring.

A key factor influencing Ford’s reassessment is the resurgence of protectionist trade policies in the United States, particularly the potential reinstatement of Trump-era tariffs on imported vehicles and components.

Should such measures return under a future administration, the economics of producing vehicles in India for export markets could become less viable, prompting Ford to reconsider its footprint in the country.

At the same time, Ford is accelerating its global transition to electric vehicles (EVs), with major investments in battery technology and next-generation platforms. However, the pace of EV adoption in India remains slower than anticipated. This has made large-scale EV manufacturing in India a challenging proposition for global OEMs like Ford.

The uncertainty surrounding the facility underscores the broader challenges faced by foreign automakers in India: from volatile policy environments to intense competition and shifting consumer preferences.

As Ford charts its post-2025 roadmap, the fate of its Chennai plant will depend on how well global strategy aligns with local realities.

For now, employees, suppliers, and local authorities await clarity on whether the plant will play a role in Ford’s next chapter or become a relic of its earlier ambitions in the Indian market.
