Hyderabad E-Prix, scheduled for February, is in jeopardy following recent elections.
In an unfortunate turn of events, the eagerly anticipated second Hyderabad E-Prix, scheduled for February 2024, has been cancelled due to recent political upheavals in the region. The Formula E event, originally slated to take place on the same street circuit as last year's inaugural race in India, faces uncertainty just six weeks before its intended date.
Formula E's statement on Hyderabad e-Prix reads, “Following a recent official communication received from the new Government of Telangana, Formula E is seeking urgent clarification of their contractual commitments under the agreement and how it could impact the Hyderabad race. Based on the content of the letter received, Formula E is concerned the race will not be able to go ahead as planned.”

Alberto Longo, Formula E's Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder, engaged in emergency talks with city officials to address the complex and sensitive situation. Despite these efforts, no resolution has been reached, leaving the event in limbo.
The suspension of the previous IPS party leader, Anjani Kumar, and the instalment of a new administration in the Telangana province have added complexities. The new administration is reportedly under pressure to prioritize other initiatives in the city, complicating negotiations with Formula E.
Negotiations between Formula E and the new administration hit an impasse just before Christmas, raising doubts about the event's future in 2025 and beyond. Unlike the 2022 situation where a replacement event was swiftly implemented for the Vancouver E-Prix, Formula E has announced that no substitute will be arranged this time. Consequently, the 2023-24 Formula E season reverts to a 16-race schedule, aligning with the previous season.
Logistical challenges emerged as some track infrastructure was in Chennai for a Formula 4 event, though this was not a contributing factor to the event's removal. The first Hyderabad E-Prix in February faced infrastructure and build issues, prompting plans for modifications to the 1.76-mile track for the second event, including addressing concerns at Turns 1-2.
A previous economic study by Nielsen Sports Analysis indicated that the Hyderabad economy enjoyed 'an $83.7 million uplift' after last February’s race, underscoring the positive impact of the Formula E event on the local economy.
As Formula E and the new administration continue negotiations, the motorsport community awaits updates on the fate of the Hyderabad E-Prix and the potential for its return to the Formula E calendar. The cancellation underscores the intricate interplay between politics and international sporting events, leaving fans and stakeholders disappointed and uncertain about the future of Formula E in Hyderabad.
