Gadkari Announces October Debut for E100 Toyota Innova

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced that a 100% ethanol-powered Toyota Innova is slated for launch in October. The upcoming release comes as India seeks to transition beyond conventional petrol-ethanol blends toward the widespread adoption of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs).

The announcement coincides with the release of a joint white paper by the All India Distillers' Association (AIDA) and IIT Delhi, titled ‘Flex-Fuel Vehicles: Enabling Energy Security and Sustainable Mobility in India’. 

Unveiled at the AIDA Green Energy Seminar 2026 earlier this month, the report presents a 10-point roadmap aimed at accelerating FFV adoption and transitioning the country from E20 fuel to higher ethanol blends such as E85 and E100. The framework addresses key areas including vehicle technology, retail infrastructure, feedstock sustainability, pricing, financing, and long-term market development.

To support higher ethanol blends, the white paper outlines specific engineering upgrades, including ethanol-compatible seals made of FKM/Viton and PTFE, adaptive ECU calibration, and higher-flow fuel injectors. 

On fuel economics, the study advocates shifting from traditional per-litre pricing to cost-per-kilometre parity. It recommends dynamic retail discounts on E85 to compensate for ethanol's lower energy density, pointing to a 25% discount compared to petrol as an example of a break-even threshold.
