The plan supports ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’, targeting a bigger global auto share and faster adoption of EVs, cleaner fuels, and advanced manufacturing.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has kick-started work on an ambitious Automotive Mission Plan 2047 (AMP 2047), a long-term strategy to transform India into a global automotive powerhouse by the time the nation completes 100 years of independence. The plan aligns with the ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision and aims to boost India’s share in global auto trade while accelerating the shift to electric vehicles (EVs), cleaner fuels, and cutting-edge manufacturing.
Why AMP 2047 Matters
Unlike short-term policies, AMP 2047 is structured as a 20-year roadmap with clear milestones for 2030, 2037, and 2047. The focus is on:
“This isn’t just about chasing trends, it’s about building an ecosystem for sustainable growth,” said Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary, MHI.
Key Goals: What’s Changing?
1. India as a Global Auto Hub
o Push for higher localisation to reduce import dependence.
o Incentivise quality manufacturing to compete with China, Europe, and ASEAN markets.
2. Electric & Green Mobility Push
o Faster adoption of EVs, hydrogen fuel cells, and hybrid tech.
o Expansion of charging infrastructure & battery-swapping networks.
3. R&D & Skilled Workforce
o More investments in autonomous driving, connected cars, and AI.
o Training programs to create 1 crore+ skilled workers for future auto jobs.
4. Stronger Exports
o Target: Doubling India’s auto export share in global markets by 2030.
How Will This Impact Car Buyers?
For consumers, AMP 2047 could bring:
Industry & Govt Working Together
Seven sub-committees, including SIAM, ACMA, CII, and top automakers, are shaping the plan to ensure it balances industry growth, sustainability, and consumer needs.
The Road Ahead
The first draft of AMP 2047 is expected by early 2025, with policy rollouts starting soon after. If successful, India could emerge as the world’s third-largest auto market while leading the green mobility revolution.
