Tesla has announced a slew of new features and changes coming to its cars via the 2026 Summer Update, and the big news for owners in India is the rollout of the Grok AI voice assistant, with support for Hindi language voice commands. It is not yet clear when or whether other Indian languages will be supported, or when localisation will come to other apps and features.
First launched only for US customers last year, Grok was only a limited conversational chatbot capable of looking up information online. Since then, however, the company has expanded its capabilities, and its India debut will coincide with the addition of car controls.
With the upcoming major update, Grok AI will be able to adjust car parameters such as the climate control and music playback. It can also be used to make phone calls, open the glove compartment, and perform other actions that currently require interaction with the central touchscreen.
The new Grok capabilities will be available across Europe and in multiple countries in Asia when the 2026 Summer Update is released, bringing feature parity with the US, Canada and Australia. Since it first launched, progressive updates in supported countries have added the ability to set or edit a navigation destination and set geofenced reminders. The “Hey Grok” wake command for hands-free operation was also added recently.
Tesla’s future roadmap includes integrating Grok with its Full Self Driving suite, allowing natural-language, conversational directions and navigation instructions. However, Tesla owners in India cannot yet use this as Full Self Driving has not officially launched here. The company recently confirmed that FSD will move to a subscription model in India, after the option to buy it as a ₹6 lakh add-on was discontinued. Tesla launched the Model Y in India just over one year ago.
Other new features and capabilities coming with the Summer Update include expanding automatic navigation suggestions beyond an owner’s home and work addresses, to include other frequently visited places. Tesla software will also be able to remember a preferred route and will prioritise that when you set a destination, even if it isn’t what the algorithm determines to be the best or fastest route.
A minor feature is the duplication of front seat control buttons in software, so the seats can now be adjusted using the central touchscreen. The rear screen can also now be locked, letting parents control what a child in the back can watch and preventing them from changing car settings. The Caraoke feature gets gamified scores, turning it into a competitive activity.

FSD visualisations get slight improvements such as the ability to configure zoom levels. Websites running in the browser on the infotainment screen can also now request access to your car’s built-in camera and microphones which can be used by communication services.
The Tesla smartphone app also gets some changes. Users can now sync images of custom car wraps to the infotainment system so their car shows up on screen looking like the real thing. Users can also set a target charge level that they want to be at when arriving at a destination, which will affect routing and charging stop suggestions. Self driving statistics are also now available in the app, so you don’t have to go through the car’s touchscreen UI to see your scores and streaks.
The update should roll out shortly to users around the world, though no exact timeframe has been specified.
