The platform uses a Qualcomm SoC and supports OTA updates, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Harman, the Samsung-owned lifestyle and automotive technology company known for its in-car infotainment systems, has unveiled a new offering aimed at motorcycles and scooters at the ongoing Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona. The new Harman Ready Ride platform will enable bikemakers to quickly develop and deploy premium connected features for safety, convenience, entertainment, and diagnostics. The company has used Qualcomm’s Digital Chassis offering and promises a roadmap of future capabilities, plus the ability for OEMs to deploy regular over-the-air updates.

Using the Ready Ride platform, bike manufacturers will be able to simplify their product development cycles and reduce costs, while offering customers up-to-date capabilities. ARAS (Advanced Rider Assistance System) enables forward collision warnings, crash and tip detection, and automatic emergency calling. The unit can have its own cellular data connectivity, and a built-in backup battery will ensure that emergency features continue to work even if the bike loses power.

Other practical features include app connectivity, vehicle status updates, theft alerts, vehicle tracking, remote control, and remote immobilisation. Bluetooth support allows for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration for navigation, media playback, calling, and messaging using the rider’s own data and preferences, and a familiar interface.

The company says using a built-in system rather than mounting a smartphone to a bike’s handlebars can be safer and more reliable for riders. It also says software updates with new features help keep a bike feeling fresh, and can improve resale value. Telematics will allow manufacturers to aggregate bike usage data to help with future product development and identifying issues that need to be addressed. Bike owners will potentially be able to get updates and fixes as well as diagnose issues without having to visit a dealer or service location.

Harman adds that it has used its years of automotive experience to tailor-make a solution that can withstand the harsh conditions that motorcycles typically endure, including vibrations, shock, exposure to inclement weather, and even washdowns. The unit is IP69 certified for dust and water resistance, and uses rugged connectors. Its body is designed for secure mounting in tight spaces.
