The SOS feature on the iPhone 14 proved to be a lifesaver yet again.
A hiker with a broken leg was successfully rescued by helicopter in Tujunga, California, thanks to the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on her iPhone 14. Juana Reyes, an avid hiker, found herself in a dire situation when she suffered a broken leg during a hike in a remote part of Trail Canyon Falls. She could not make a regular 911 call for help as she was cut off from cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. However, the SOS feature on her iPhone 14 proved to be a lifesaver.
Despite not knowing how the feature worked, Reyes managed to activate the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on her iPhone 14. This new functionality, introduced with the iPhone 14 lineup, allows users to access emergency services even when no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is available. It presents a user-friendly interface with a questionnaire that gathers essential information and transmits it to dispatchers via satellite.
Search and rescue teams have been praising this groundbreaking iPhone feature, which has led to multiple successful helicopter rescues. Reyes' rescue marks the third time this year that the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature has been credited with saving lives.
Speaking about the incident, Reyes expressed her gratitude for the iPhone's SOS feature, stating, "Thankfully, my phone has that SOS satellite feature that was able to connect to… I don’t know exactly how it works, I’m assuming satellites."
