Product with low carbon emissions in its production process, expected to be used by auto-manufacturers for emission compliance.
Hindustan Zinc which is a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited and the world's second-largest zinc producer and third-largest silver producer, has launched a new product called EcoZen Zinc. This sustainability-aimed product is a low-carbon zinc, designed to reduce the carbon footprint associated with zinc production.
The product itself is not chemically different from zinc but the generation of electricity required in the production process is from renewable sources. The company plans to gradually increase the percentage of EcoZen Zinc in its portfolio based on market demand. This product is expected to hit the market next month.
Hindustan Zinc's EcoZen Zinc might be used in the automotive industry. Zinc plays a crucial role in the automotive production process. Its used in the protection and preservation of steel components. Wherever steel is used, zinc is essential, as it provides a sacrificial layer that guards against corrosion and rust. In the automotive industry, zinc is used extensively in galvanizing steel parts, such as chassis, body frames, and engine components, to ensure durability and longevity. Additionally, zinc is used in battery production, alloying, and die-casting, making it an indispensable element in the vehicle manufacturing process. Its anti-corrosive properties and ability to extend the life of steel components make zinc a vital material in the automotive sector.
Hindustan Zinc brings about a dual advantage. Firstly, the reduced CO2 emissions contribute significantly to environmental sustainability, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. Secondly, as automobile manufacturers have to meet stringent emission compliance even in the production process this could come handy as it takes some share off the meeting the compliance.
Specifically, when exporting goods to Europe, the reduced carbon footprint of EcoZen Zinc helps meet the stringent emission sustainability requirements of the final product, thereby reducing the overall carbon cost. This compliance assistance due to the use of the EcoZen Zin improves the product's marketability and its preference over regular zinc.
With mine reserves expected to last around 30 years, Hindustan Zinc is poised for long-term sustainability. The launch of EcoZen Zinc and the company's commitment to sustainable silver production position it for future growth and success in an increasingly environmentally conscious market. In addition to the launch of EcoZen Zinc, Hindustan Zinc already has its silver production is entirely based on renewable and sustainable sources of energy.
