Honda's electrification plans include the launch of an electric vehicle in India by 2027
Honda Motor Company has announced an aggressive product expansion strategy for the Indian market, committing to launch 10 new models by 2030 with a major focus on sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and electric mobility. The Japanese automaker revealed its comprehensive roadmap at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, signalling a significant shift in its positioning to capture the rapidly growing SUV segment in India.
The announcement marks a decisive turning point for Honda in India, where the company currently offers limited portfolio of three vehicles: the Amaze and City sedans, plus the Elevate mid-size SUV. Industry experts suggest the new strategy aims to challenge competitors like Hyundai, Kia, and Maruti Suzuki that dominate the Indian passenger vehicle market.

"We are thinking aggressively about our model launch plans," said Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO of Honda Cars India. "We plan to launch 10 or more new models by 2030, including seven SUVs. We are considering a wider range of products — from high-volume models to premium vehicles — to strengthen Honda's overall portfolio and appeal in India."

Of the seven SUVs planned, several will be global products making their Indian debut, while others will be specifically designed for Indian customers. Honda plans to compete across multiple segments, including the compact sub-four-metre category—a high-volume segment currently dominated by Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and Hyundai Venue.
The company's India strategy aligns with Honda's global growth priorities. Toshihiro Mibe, Honda Motor Company President, emphasised India's importance: "India is going to be a priority market, and that's the market where we want to spend more effort going forward. Within Honda, we've initiated a project team, especially for the Indian market, and the project team is working on coming up with a strategy for the Indian market now."
Honda's electrification plans include the launch of an electric vehicle in India by 2027. The company unveiled the Honda 0 Alpha prototype at the show—a locally-manufactured electric SUV combining a longer wheelbase than the current Elevate with advanced battery technology. The 0 Alpha features a born-electric platform following Honda's "Thin, Light, and Wise" design philosophy, offering an estimated driving range of 400-500 kilometres.
Additionally, Honda plans to expand its hybrid offerings across various segments and introduce products with multiple powertrain options including conventional petrol engines, hybrid systems, and full electric variants. The strategy reflects India's automotive industry shift toward cleaner technologies whilst maintaining diverse customer preferences across market segments.
