The transition to electric begins with the launch of its first electric motorcycle by the end of this year.
In a major move towards environmental sustainability, Honda is going all electric in the next decade and a half. The company has set a target to have its entire motorcycle fleet be electric by 2040. This means the iconic Honda motorcycles we know today will be replaced by zero-emission electric versions in the next 16 years.
Honda Motorcycles is wasting no time and it has announced the launch of its first electric motorcycle later this year, powered by a new, innovative battery technology called the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: (MPP). This technology is expected to be a game-changer, offering extended range and efficient battery swapping.
The company is also investing heavily in building a strong EV brand and establishing a cost-effective battery supply chain. By 2030, it plans to launch a total of seven electric motorcycle models globally, catering to a variety of styles and preferences. This includes everything from sporty electric machines designed to take on the twisties with agility and verve, to comfortable cruisers for weekend getaways, to economical and efficient commuter bikes perfect for navigating city streets.
The company believes electric vehicles (EVs) are the most effective solution for small mobility products like motorcycles. This move echoes a similar target set for its automobile segment, aiming for 100% electric and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) by 2040.
While we, motorcycle enthusiasts, might miss the characteristics of a petrol engine from Honda, there is no light that the company will continue to keep them around. Honda's internal combustion engines (ICE) have been known for their smoothness and reliability for decades. From the legendary CBR1000RR to the smaller commuter machines that have been workhorses in India, like the Honda Activa and Honda Shine, Honda's ICE engines have earned a loyal following.
This announcement is a major step forward for the motorcycle industry and paves the way for a more sustainable future. But at what cost? With Honda leading the charge, we can expect to see a surge in electric motorcycles on roads worldwide in the coming years.
