HMSI will replace the affected part free of cost from November, as part of a wider campaign that has already covered tens of thousands of motorcycles in the United States.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) has launched a voluntary recall of 96 units of the Rebel 500 cruiser, built between April and August 2025, over a handle-lock fixing screw that may not have been tightened to specification during assembly. HMSI said on Wednesday that the screw could loosen over time and interfere with steering movement, and that the exercise is part of a global recall initiated by Honda.
No related incidents have been reported in India as of 30 September 2026, according to the company. As a precaution, HMSI will replace the handle-lock screw free of charge on every affected motorcycle, regardless of warranty status, when the campaign begins in the first week of November at authorised BigWing dealerships. Owners will be contacted by phone, email or SMS, and can also check their vehicle's eligibility by entering the VIN on HMSI's website.

The defect mirrors one that triggered a far larger recall in the United States this year. American Honda first notified regulators in March of a handlebar lock screw that could loosen and fall between the frame and steering stem on roughly 19,000 Rebel and CL500 motorcycles, then widened that campaign in July to cover 43,913 units of the Rebel 300, Rebel 500 and SCL500 after tracing the fault to unclear assembly instructions and a tool-management lapse on the line. Honda's remedy there involves replacing the screw and applying thread lock, with a permanent fix still being rolled out.
India's Rebel 500 is sold only as a fully imported motorcycle, through BigWing Topline outlets in Gurugram, Mumbai and Bengaluru, at an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.12 lakh. Its small, three-city footprint explains the modest scale of the Indian recall compared with the US action, even though the defect and the affected production window largely overlap.
The campaign adds to a run of precautionary recalls HMSI has issued for its premium motorcycle range over the past year, including one for the CB1000 Hornet SP in May covering a gear-shift pedal bolt, fuel hose and engine oil consumption. Such campaigns tend to involve small volumes, reflecting the import-led, low-volume nature of Honda's big-bike business in India, where demand for motorcycles above 500cc has in fact been shrinking even as the overall two-wheeler market grows.
