HP and Google have announced a collaboration to manufacture Chromebook laptops in India, supporting the government's Make in India initiative. The partnership aims to boost digital education in India by providing affordable, high-quality computing devices to schools and educational institutions.
The Chromebooks will be manufactured at HP's production facility near Chennai, where the company has been making laptops and desktops since August 2020. HP will start production of the Chromebooks on October 2 to meet the growing demand for affordable personal computers, especially from the education sector.
"These are the first Chromebooks to be made in India and will make it easier for Indian students to have access to affordable and secure computing," CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted.
"Manufacturing Chromebook laptops in India will allow Indian students to get easy access to affordable PCs. By further expanding our manufacturing operations, we continue to support the Make in India initiative of the Government," said Vickram Bedi, Senior Director of Personal Systems, HP India.
Chromebooks run on Google's ChromeOS operating system and are widely used in K-12 education globally, with over 50 million students and teachers using them. They have built-in accessibility features and security measures to facilitate better classroom engagement and keep user data safe.
HP has significantly grown its manufacturing operations in India since 2020. In December 2021, the company started manufacturing a range of laptops in India, including HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks and HP G8 series. HP has also expanded its portfolio of locally made commercial desktops, covering mini towers, mini desktops, small form factors and all-in-one PCs with both Intel and AMD processors.
The made-in-India Chromebooks are expected to provide a high-quality and affordable computing option to Indian students and educational institutions.
