Nearly 45% of car purchases have traditionally been in the ₹6 lakh–₹10 lakh price band.
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) clocked total sales of 60,501 units in August 2025 — domestic dispatches stood at 44,001 units — just ahead of the GST cut taking effect on September 22, 2025. The reduced GST rate, which slashes tax on small cars under four metres from 28% to 18%, is expected to rekindle demand in the ₹6 lakh–₹10 lakh segment, traditionally accounting for nearly 45% of car purchases.
“We are very much there with the Nios and i20, you see the Aura and the Verna in the sedan segment, and the Exter segment. I think one thing which is very important is that the majority of car purchases happen in the ₹6,00,000–₹10,00,000 segment, and Hyundai has so many models there... I would say that is contributing probably close to 40% and more, you know, maybe 45%, and that is where we have such a huge chunk of models.” said Tarun Garg, COO, HMIL.
Hyundai’s Venue and Exter have emerged as key volume drivers in recent months. In July 2025, the Venue sold 8,054 units while the Exter moved 5,075 units, contributing significantly to the company’s 43,973 domestic sales that month.
Garg continued to state “Even now, I believe with the GST going down, I think the segment where we have Exter, Venue, is going to probably see the maximum growth... because that takes care of both affordability as well as aspiration."
Talking about the company's portfolio, he said "For Hyundai, 60% is in the 18% GST bracket and 40% is in the 28% GST one. For us the majority is still in the 18% GST, but within that the Venue and Exter segment is one where we feel the maximum growth can happen."
With the GST reduction, Hyundai aims to leverage these models’ strong value proposition, combining affordability, feature-rich packaging, and aspirational SUV styling, to capture a larger share of first-time buyers and up-trading customers.
