In a notable enhancement in imaging, the Apple iPhone 18, likely for 2026 release, will introduce a variable aperture system in its wide-camera module, according to famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities.
This innovation will let users adjust the aperture size, marking a substantial advancement in mobile photography capabilities in iPhones.

The implementation of this feature involves a strategic supply chain partnership, with Sunny Optical serving as the primary shutter supplier and Luxshare providing supplementary support.
Notably, BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI) will also contribute essential equipment for aperture blade assembly.
"The iPhone 18 Pro’s wide camera will upgrade to variable aperture in 2026. BESI is the supplier of assembly equipment for aperture blades, a critical component of this upgrade," Kuo wrote on Medium.
Regarding processor development, Kuo's analysis via Medium indicates that Apple's M5 series chips -- specifically the Pro, Max, and Ultra variants -- will incorporate advanced server-grade System on Integrated Chips (SoIC) architecture.
This design will use 2.5D packaging technology, known as SoIC-mH, optimising both thermal management and production efficiency. These enhancements position the M5 series particularly well for artificial intelligence applications.
This information updates previous market speculation that had suggested an earlier implementation of the variable aperture technology in the iPhone 17 series. Kuo's research confirms that this feature will be exclusive to the iPhone 18 lineup.
