With domestic demand holding steady and supply conditions expected to improve, the industry is widely projected to breach the five-million annual sales threshold in FY27.
India's passenger vehicle (PV) market is on course to record sales of approximately 4.7 million units in the current financial year (FY), in line with industry targets, even as manufacturers and dealers contend with supply disruptions and sharply higher logistics costs stemming from the conflict in West Asia, Economic Times has reported. Industry figures said volumes could have been greater had freight bottlenecks and elevated transportation expenses not constrained factory dispatches in the final weeks of FY26.
The sector's underlying growth momentum remains intact. With domestic demand holding steady and supply conditions expected to improve, the industry is widely projected to breach the five-million annual sales threshold in FY27 -- a milestone that would mark a new chapter in the scale of India's car market.
Dealers across the country are reporting robust bookings ahead of the financial year-end, historically the busiest period for vehicle sales, but warn that stock levels have tightened owing to slower shipments from manufacturers.
One senior executive at a major carmaker was quoted as saying in the report the pressure was building on the supply side even as consumer appetite remained healthy. "Demand on the ground continues to be strong and bookings remain healthy, but supply-side pressures are building up," the executive said.
"Freight rates have moved up sharply and logistics availability has tightened in some pockets. If these issues persist, wholesale dispatches could see some dip even though retail demand remains intact," the person added.
On the ground, dealers say the constraints are already costing them business. "Even now there is year-on-year growth, but steady supply is becoming a challenge," Vinkesh Gulati, a dealer, was quoted as saying. "We are losing opportunity this month as supply from manufacturers is down by about 10-15 per cent."
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has raised the issue formally with the government, drawing attention to supply chain disruptions, freight bottlenecks, and rising transportation costs that risk depressing factory dispatches. Dealers point out that vehicle movement has grown more expensive after transport operators raised freight charges following the removal of earlier diesel discounts, squeezing already tight margins. Carmakers have also highlighted rising operating costs in energy-intensive parts of the production process, including paint shops at manufacturing facilities.
Despite the near-term headwinds, companies say the strength of domestic demand remains the industry's primary growth driver. Order books are healthy and consumer interest, particularly in sport utility vehicles, continues to sustain sales momentum.
"India's automotive market is showing remarkable resilience despite global uncertainty," Ravi Bhatia, president at Jato Dynamics, was quoted as saying in the report.
Maruti Suzuki has said it is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East, though it noted its direct exposure to the region is limited and that strong domestic demand continues to support output. Mahindra & Mahindra reported an increase in domestic SUV sales in February, pointing to sustained appetite for sport utility vehicles, while Tata Motors cited strong performance in both its SUV and electric vehicle lines, the report further added.
