In Episode 6 of the podcast series “Which Car Should I Buy?” we are discussing the rare earth magnets shortage experienced by our country.
India's rapidly growing electric vehicle (EV) industry is under threat due to a critical reliance on rare earth magnets, as highlighted in the Episode 6 of our “Which Car Should I Buy?” Podcast series titled“Rare Earth Magnets: The Hidden Danger To India's EV Future.” These powerful magnets are essential components in EV motors, especially for high-performance and energy-efficient applications. However, over 90% of the global supply of rare earth magnets is controlled by China, leaving India’s EV sector vulnerable to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions.
While India has made strides in EV adoption, it lacks a domestic manufacturing ecosystem for these crucial magnets. Without local production, India’s ambitious clean energy transition could be jeopardised by export bans, rising costs, or supply shortages. Efforts are underway to address this challenge. The Indian government has identified rare earth elements as a strategic priority and is encouraging mining, refining, and magnet-making capabilities. Startups and established companies are also exploring alternative magnet technologies and partnerships to reduce dependence on imports.
For India to achieve a self-reliant and sustainable EV future, investing in rare earth magnet production is no longer optional—it’s essential. Stakeholders must act quickly to build resilient supply chains and reduce the strategic chokehold posed by rare earth materials.
