India’s passenger vehicle market witnessed a dynamic sales performance in May 2025, with Maruti Suzuki continuing to assert its dominance by occupying six out of the top ten positions in the sales chart. According to data, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire led the pack with 18,084 units sold, registering a 13 ¸year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth over May 2024.
The Dzire’s strong performance was closely followed by the Maruti Ertiga, which recorded sales of 16,140 units—up 16 per cent from the previous year. The Brezza secured third place, clocking 15,566 units and a 10 per cent increase Y-o-Y. Despite this dominance, not all Maruti models witnessed growth. The Swift saw a significant 27 per cent decline, selling 14,135 units compared to 19,393 units in May 2024. The Wagon R also slipped marginally by 4 per cent, recording 13,949 units, while the Baleno dropped 10 per cent to 11,618 units.
Sr No. | Models | Units Sold In May 2025 |
---|---|---|
1. | Maruti Suzuki Dzire | 18,084 units |
2. | Maruti Suzuki Ertiga | 16,140 units |
3. | Maruti Suzuki Brezza | 15,566 units |
4. | Hyundai Creta | 14,860 units |
5. | Mahindra Scorpio | 14,401 units |
6. | Maruti Suzuki Swift | 14,135 units |
7. | Maruti Suzuki Wagon R | 13,949 units |
8 | Maruti Suzuki Fronx | 13,584 units |
9. | Tata Punch | 13,133 units |
10. | Tata Nexon | 13,096 units |
Hyundai retained a strong fourth position with the Creta SUV, which posted flat growth at 1 per cent Y-o-Y, tallying 14,860 units. However, its overall presence in the top 10 remained limited.
Tata Motors’ Punch came in at ninth with 13,133 units, though this marked a steep 31 per cent drop from May 2024. On the other hand, the Nexon showed positive momentum, growing 14 per cent to reach 13,096 units and securing the tenth spot.
Mahindra’s Scorpio took fifth place with 14,401 units sold—a 5 per cent increase Y-o-Y. Its consistent performance is indicative of the strong rural and semi-urban demand the model commands. With SUVs forming the core of Mahindra’s lineup, the Scorpio's stable growth underlines the brand's successful positioning in that space.
Among the top 10, the most significant gainer was the Tata Nexon, which jumped 14 per cent Y-o-Y. The Dzire, Ertiga, and Brezza also continued their upward trajectory with double-digit growth, confirming continued buyer interest in tried-and-tested models in both urban and Tier II/III markets.
In contrast, the Tata Punch's decline of 31 per cent stands out as the most notable drop in the top 10, suggesting that the micro-SUV segment may be facing stiff competition or demand saturation. Similarly, the Swift’s 27 per cent fall may indicate that Maruti’s younger customer base is pivoting towards more feature-rich offerings in the same price band.
