Intel has unveiled a new feature for its Thunderbolt technology called Thunderbolt Share.

Intel has unveiled a new feature for its Thunderbolt technology called Thunderbolt Share, which allows users to control two PCs simultaneously by connecting them via a USB cable. This evolution of Thunderbolt, originally developed by Intel and Apple as a high-speed data transfer protocol, now offers more functionality for users.

Thunderbolt Share will be compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and 5 PCs and will come with a custom app that Intel will license to laptop, desktop, and accessory manufacturers. Users can connect two devices using a Thunderbolt cable via USB, enabling them to share mouse, keyboard, screens, storage, and other USB peripherals, as well as drag and drop files at Thunderbolt speeds and sync data. However, internet connection sharing will not be possible.

Intel claims that the experience has such low latency that users can mirror one PC screen to another at full HD resolution and 60 frames per second without compression. PCs can also connect through a Thunderbolt dock or monitor for added convenience.

Compatibility extends beyond Thunderbolt-certified computers and Intel processors, although Intel Thunderbolt chief Jason Ziller notes that while USB 4 and Thunderbolt 3 connections may work, they are not guaranteed, and Intel will not provide support for them.

OEMs will be charged an extra licensing fee for the required app, with users receiving a second license with any Thunderbolt Share PC or two with any accessory purchased. Intel will ensure a great experience by testing and certifying devices that support the feature.

Currently, Thunderbolt Share is a Windows-only experience, with Intel exploring other OS opportunities. Acer, Lenovo, MSI, and Razer are the first PC partners for this initiative, alongside accessory vendors Belkin, Kensington, Plugable, and Promise Technology. This new feature is likely to replace the easy transfer cables designed for PC migration, which these companies previously sold.
