Apple, previously on the back foot in the rapidly evolving generative AI landscape, is now making a significant pivot. The tech giant, spurred by the transformative impact of technologies like ChatGPT, Bard, and Claude over the last year, is channeling billions of dollars into generative AI, marking it as a key element of its forthcoming software platforms, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This strategic shift has led to a temporary halt in the development of iOS 18 and macOS 15, with Apple refocusing efforts to eliminate bugs.
Competitor Google is already integrating AI-driven features such as text-to-image generation, document summarization, and real-time translation. In a parallel move, Apple plans a major overhaul of Siri, enhancing it with a large language model.
Gurman anticipates that the iPhone 16 will not focus extensively on hardware upgrades but will instead emphasize AI capabilities, potentially making the next iOS release one of the most significant in Apple's history. The iPhone 16 is expected to debut with the A18 Pro processor and introduce a new capture button adjacent to the power button.
Camera upgrades are on the horizon, with larger sensors expected in comparison to the iPhone 14 and 15 models. The smaller iPhone 16 Pro may feature a 5x zoom lens, mirroring the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Apple's macOS 15 is also set to join this AI-centric trend, challenging Windows 11, which is doubling down on generative AI. This includes leveraging Microsoft's co-pilot technology in its Office apps and the GPT4 AI LLM-powered Bing Chat.
