Jaguar Land Rover has denied media reports about the dismissal of design chief Gerry McGovern, affirming he remains with the company amid leadership changes.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has officially denied recent media reports suggesting that its long-serving design chief, Gerry McGovern, has been dismissed from his position.
The clarification comes after several publications claimed that McGovern was “escorted out of the office” last week.
Gerry McGovern has been a pivotal figure at Jaguar and Land Rover for over two decades, playing a crucial role in shaping the design language of both brands. His influence is evident in some of the most recognisable models, such as the Range Rover Evoque, Velar, Defender, and the latest Range Rover.
McGovern also led the team behind the Type 00 concept, which sparked considerable debate within the automotive community. Prior to his tenure at JLR, McGovern worked with the Austin Rover Group, where he contributed to concept vehicles like the MG EX-E and production models such as the MG F sports car and the Land Rover Freelander.
The speculation around McGovern’s departure surfaced shortly after the retirement of former JLR CEO Adrian Mardell. The company is now under the leadership of PB Balaji, who previously served as the finance head at Tata Motors, JLR’s parent company.
With over 32 years of experience, including more than a decade at Tata Motors, Balaji’s appointment signals a potential shift in JLR’s strategic direction. Industry observers suggest that Balaji may introduce changes at JLR, especially in response to the mixed reactions following Jaguar’s recent rebranding efforts.
Despite the swirling rumours, JLR’s official stance remains firm that Gerry McGovern continues to be part of the company, and no further comments will be made on the matter.
