If Kawasaki plans to bring the W230 to India, it must ensure it doesn’t meet the same fate as the W175.
Kawasaki is commemorating the 60th anniversary of its iconic W lineup of retro motorcycles, which started off with the 650-W1 in 1965. On this occasion, India Kawasaki has dropped a teaser of the W230 on its Instagram handle. This raises the question whether Kawasaki is planning to introduce the W230 in the Indian market.
The Japanese bikemaker hasn’t made an official announcement regarding the same but since the video specifically features the W230, chances are high that it may land in India soon. If it does, the Kawasaki W230 could be a good bet, given the affinity for retro-style motorcycles in India. The W230 recently made its way to the United Kingdom market last month.
The brand has seldom, if ever, shared content about motorcycles that are neither on sale nor intended for launch in the country. This indicates that the video is less of a nostalgic tribute and more like a subtle teaser. The video comes along with a caption that says, “Bringing the joy of riding to all. The W230 inherits the traditional style and riding pedigree of the W brand.”
Powering the Kawasaki W230 is a 233 cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine which produces 17.3 bhp at 7,000 rpm and 18.6 Nm of peak torque at 5,800 rpm. This is the same engine that the brand has recently localised for the KLX230 in the Indian market. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox.

Suspension setup on the Kawasaki W230 comprises a 37 mm telescopic front fork and preload adjustable twin shocks at the rear. Braking duties are carried out by a 265 mm front disc with a dual-piston caliper and a 220 mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper. The bike tips the weighing scales at 133 kg and comes with a 745 mm seat height. The W230 comes with a 12-litre fuel capacity and offers a ground clearance of 150 mm.
The modern classic design with a round headlamp, wire-spoked wheels, and plenty of chrome touches would make the Kawasaki W230 a piece of eye candy. However, Kawasaki needs to ensure that the W230 doesn’t meet the same fate as the W175 which hardly made any impact on the Indian market. Hence, it needs to be priced correctly, somewhere around ₹1.75 lakh (ex-showroom).
