Upon launch, the Kia Sorento will take on other D-segment SUVs like Toyota Fortuner, Volkswagen Tayron, Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq, and the upcoming MG Majestor.

The D-segment SUV space is about to get spicier with the launch of MG Majestor soon. That said, it isn’t just the Majestor that will be grabbing headlines. Apparently Kia is also planning to launch its own D-segment SUV soon in India. The Kia Sorento Hybrid has been caught testing in India for the first time.

The three-row SUV was reportedly spotted testing somewhere around Delhi. Although the spy images show a test mule completely under wraps, it isn’t difficult to conclude that underneath it is the Sorento. The spy images show the Sorento entering and exiting a toll plaza, as well as being driven along a highway.

Kia Sorento: Design & Dimensions

The Kia Sorento has been on sale in several international markets for some years now. The SUV carries an upright and boxy silhouette that gives it a large footprint. It gets squared-off wheel arches, a high-set bonnet, a wide rear section, and a flat tailgate. Additionally, the test mule in these spy shots is equipped with chrome window surrounds and raised roof rails finished in black.

The front and rear ends are heavily camouflaged, but T-shaped LED DRLs and sleek connected LED taillamps are still visible, highlighting the vehicle’s width. Complementing the design of the SUV are large 19-inch alloy wheels. Speaking of which, the Kia Sorento measures around around 4.8 metres in length, 1,900mm in width, 1,700 mm in height, and offers a wheelbase of 2,815 mm which is comparable to segment rivals like Toyota Fortuner and Jeep Meridian.

Kia Sorento: Powertrain

Globally, Kia Sorento is offered with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, turbo petrol and hybrid setups. The India-spec Sorento is expected to be powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol hybrid powertrain that pushes out 234 bhp in standard hybrid form. A plug-in hybrid variant could offer up to 288 hp. Transmission options are likely to include a six-speed automatic and an eight-speed dual-clutch, with all-wheel-drive available for better traction and  off-road capability.

Kia Sorento: Expected Launch & Price

We expect the Kia Sorento to make its debut in India towards the end of this year or early next year. The Sorento is expected to be locally assembled in India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kit. Hence, expect it to be priced around ₹35-40 lakh (ex-showroom).
