The camshaft issue was reported in the LC8 parallel-twin motor.
As KTM gears up to launch multiple new bikes, the Austrian brand hasn’t forgotten its past launches. To that effect, it announced a goodwill repair program for LC8c parallel-twin models affected by a camshaft wear issue. The program will cover both in-warranty and out-of-warranty motorcycles, confirmed KTM’s UK head of customer service, Gareth Edmunds. While a full manufacturer service history is typically required, KTM is making exceptions for owners with incomplete records, provided they can supply evidence of external servicing.
The issue primarily affects pre-2021 KTM 790 models, with approximately 0.5 per cent of the 55,000 bikes sold globally experiencing problems. KTM implemented an additional oil screen in 2020 and modified finger followers in 2021 to address the issue.

KTM’s Vice President of Global Motorcycle Marketing, Federico Valentini explained that the root cause was insufficient width and production tolerances in the finger followers, potentially leading to excessive camshaft wear. The company has since widened the finger followers and applied an improved DLC coating. KTM also addressed rare instances of excessive wear due to debris in the oil duct by installing a cleaning unit.

Furthermore, KTM will also cover all repair and replacement costs. Customers who have already paid for repairs will be reimbursed under the goodwill agreement. While the brand claims that newer models are unaffected, some reports suggest issues persists with the recently produced 790 and 890 models, as well as Husqvarna's Norden 901 range. Symptoms of the problem include decreased performance, unusual engine noise, and starting difficulties. Affected owners are advised to contact their nearest KTM dealer for support.
