KTM has officially revealed its first automatic gearbox. It is the first of the many new products that Team Orange is slated to launch in the upcoming days, which will finally culminate on the show floors of Milan at EICMA 2024.
KTM’s innovative transmission system will offer riders the benefit of a fully automated mode for everyday convenience and a manual mode that maintains the engaging riding experience KTM is known for. This development represents a major step forward in motorcycle transmission technology, making the Austrian brand the latest to join the bandwagon, along with Yamaha, and BMW.
In a dramatic demonstration of the system's capabilities, KTM professional rider Johnny Aubert successfully piloted a prototype equipped with AMT up the challenging Iron Road Prologue at the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo, showcasing its versatility in extreme conditions. The prototype again was a brand new bike – the KTM 1390 Super Adventure R – slated for launch in the coming weeks. You can check out the demonstration of the same in the video below:

The AMT system introduces several key features. Starting with its unique P-N-1-2-3-4-5-6 gear sequence, including a dedicated PARK position, the automated clutch engagement is based on engine speed. With ultra-fast 50-millisecond shift times, the new AMT gearbox promises to match the performance of traditional quick-shifter systems. Lastly, dual control options, via either a traditional foot lever or handlebar-mounted paddle shifter will give the riders a familiar setup that will enable them to control the gearbox behaviour.
KTM has emphasised that despite the addition of automation, the system maintains traditional gearbox proportions and weight, ensuring that the core riding experience remains intact. The company has also integrated the AMT with existing ride modes, allowing for customisation based on rider preferences and conditions. While initially available on select upcoming models, KTM plans to expand the AMT option across its range in the coming years.
