After Honda And BMW, KTM might be next to introduce an automatic transmission on an adventure motorcycle.
KTM has just unveiled a prototype of its next-generation Super Adventure that promises to redefine the off-road experience. While details are still emerging, the early glimpse suggests a significant leap forward in both design and technology. It is likely to boast of features that cater to both experienced riders seeking enhanced performance and new riders who want to experience the thrill of off-road exploration with the comfort of an automatic transmission.
The prototype has a completely redesigned front, with a sharp, angular headlight inspired by the aggressive styling of the KTM Duke family. This new design language is a clear goodbye to the more rounded headlights of previous KTM Super Adventure models. It hints at a more aggressive and purposeful stance. The revised headlight unit is equipped with LED lighting.
Moving down the flanks, the prototype retains the signature muscularity of the KTM Super Adventure line. The broad fairings with prominent air intakes promise ample wind protection and comfort for long-distance rides. The radiator shrouds appear to be redesigned as well, possibly incorporating new features to optimise engine cooling in challenging environments
On the engine front, rumours suggest a potential upgrade to a larger engine, possibly the same as the 1390 Super Duke R, which jumped from 1290cc to 1350cc. This also saw a corresponding increase in power to around 190 bhp and 143 Nm. If a similar power bump is applied to the Super Adventure, it would offer riders significantly more muscle for tackling challenging off-road inclines and navigating rough terrain.
But the real showstopper is the inclusion of an Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT). This marks a bold move for KTM, traditionally known for catering to experienced riders who relish the control of a manual gearbox. The AMT eliminates the need for a clutch lever, offering a seamless and convenient riding experience.
This is particularly beneficial in challenging off-road situations where riders need to focus on navigating obstacles and maintaining control. However, the AMT doesn't force riders to forego manual control entirely. The system offers the flexibility to switch between automatic gear changes and manual control using buttons on the handlebar or a foot lever on the left side. This caters to a wider range of riders. Beginners can enjoy the convenience of automatic shifting, while experienced riders can still engage with the riding experience by selecting gears manually when desired.
Perhaps most importantly, the impressive performance of the AMT system during the gruelling Erzbergrodeo suggests it's well-suited for demanding off-road conditions, opening up adventure riding to a whole new audience.
The inclusion of the AMT system raises intriguing questions. How will it impact performance and fuel efficiency? Will it maintain the raw, connected feel that many adventure riders crave? These questions will surely be answered when KTM unveils the full details of the prototype on September 24, 2024.
