Mahindra Thar OG: Key Highlights

Mahindra has officially launched the updated Thar OG in India, with prices ranging between ₹10.32-17.75 lakh (ex-showroom). However, while it looks like a mere facelift, a lot has actually changed. So, here are the top highlights of the Mahindra Thar OG.

New Platform and Revised Suspension

Moving beyond simple aesthetic tweaks, the SUV receives a ground-up engineering overhaul built on a newly developed chassis platform that offers greater structural stiffness. Mechanical upgrades include a reworked Pentalink rear suspension setup designed to enhance cornering stability, paired with Davinci frequency-dependent damping tech for improved ride comfort over rough terrain.

Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine now produces 160 bhp and 330 Nm of torque, while the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel delivers 150 bhp and 330 Nm. The entry-level 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel continues to generate 116 bhp and 300 Nm.

Better Steering and Off-Road Ability

Everyday drivability is further improved by a switch to electric power steering, making low-speed manoeuvring noticeably lighter.

The update also introduces an Electronic Locking Differential (ELD), which electronically locks the rear axle to direct engine power to the wheel with the most traction, enhancing grip on slippery terrain like mud or sand. Additionally, the SUV now features specialised Mud, Sand, and Snow terrain modes. Both of these enhancements are available only on the 4WD variants of the high-spec LXT and ZXT trims.

More Features

Inside, the cabin receives embossed leatherette upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a larger touchscreen display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, and a colour multi-information display. Safety features have been expanded to include six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, a tyre pressure monitoring system, and a rear-view camera.

However, certain features like ADAS, 360-degree camera, auto dimming IRVM, and digital driver’s display will remain exclusive to the bigger Thar Roxx, at least for the time being.
