The Thar Roxx marks a significant step forward for Mahindra.
Mahindra & Mahindra is set to introduce its highly anticipated 5-door SUV, the Thar Roxx, on August 15, 2024. This new model marks a significant step forward for Mahindra, as it looks to expand the appeal of its Thar brand by offering a vehicle that combines the rugged off-road capabilities the Thar is known for, with enhanced practicality and modern amenities. The Thar Roxx will rival against the Force Gurkha 5-door and even the Maruti Suzuki Jimny in the compact off-road SUV segment.
One of the most notable changes in the Thar Roxx is its new 6-slat grille, a departure from the 7-slat design that has been a hallmark of the 3-door Thar. This design choice, along with the split grille sections, gives the Thar Roxx a unique identity while still maintaining the brand’s signature look. The new grille is not just a cosmetic update but part of a broader redesign that includes new LED projector headlights with integrated C-shaped LED DRLs, offering a modern and refined front fascia. These updates contrast with the simpler design of its 3-door predecessor, though elements like the indicator and fog lamp placement remain unchanged, preserving some of the original Thar’s character.
Underneath its revamped exterior, the Thar Roxx is built on Mahindra’s new 3G platform, which also underpins the Scorpio-N. This platform has allowed Mahindra to make the Roxx 40 kg lighter than its predecessors while enhancing its structural integrity through the use of advanced high-strength steel, particularly in critical areas like the pillars. The SUV features an all-metal body shell, including a full metal hard top, further emphasising its robust build quality.
Inside, the Thar Roxx continues the brand’s move towards a more premium and refined experience. The SUV features a dual-tone black-and-white color scheme, with seats upholstered in white leatherette, accented by copper stitching on the dashboard. These touches add a layer of sophistication to the otherwise rugged vehicle, making it more appealing to urban buyers who may be looking for a blend of style and functionality.
Mahindra has equipped the Thar Roxx with a suite of technological advancements that represent a significant upgrade from the current Thar. The SUV is expected to come with a large touchscreen infotainment system and a digital driver’s display, likely measuring 10.25 inches each. These features are accompanied by modern amenities such as automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon sound system, and a panoramic sunroof. The addition of ventilated front seats highlights Mahindra’s commitment to combining comfort with the Thar’s traditionally utilitarian focus, making the Roxx a more versatile vehicle for daily use.
Safety is another area where the Thar Roxx is expected to make significant strides. In addition to standard features like 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), and hill hold and descent control, the Thar Roxx may also introduce more advanced safety technologies. These could include a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking. These technologies, already seen in Mahindra’s XUV700 and XUV 3XO models, would make the Thar Roxx one of the most advanced SUVs in its segment in terms of safety.
On the mechanical front, the Thar Roxx will feature an independent front suspension setup with double wishbones, along with a multilink rear setup with Watts linkage. Mahindra’s ‘Frequency Dependent Damping’ technology is also expected to be part of the package, enhancing ride quality by adjusting the damping characteristics based on road conditions. These features, shared with the Scorpio N, should provide the Thar Roxx with a comfortable and controlled ride, both on and off the road.
The Thar Roxx is expected to carry forward the engine options from the current Thar, including a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. However, these engines may be tuned to deliver more power to suit the larger and potentially heavier Thar Roxx. Buyers will have the option of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, with both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) configurations available. This range of options should cater to a wide variety of buyers, from urban commuters to off-road enthusiasts.
Mahindra has strategically positioned the Thar Roxx to compete directly with the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door, while also offering a larger alternative to the compact Maruti Jimny. With an expected starting price of around ₹15 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the Thar Roxx is set to appeal to buyers looking for a blend of off-road capability and on-road practicality in a spacious package.
