We break down the key distinctions between the Thar Roxx and the 3-door Thar.
The Mahindra Thar has been a staple for adventure seekers in India, offering rugged off-road capabilities with a blend of modern design. The launch of the much-anticipated Mahindra Thar Roxx has introduced a 5-door version that aims to cater to a broader audience, offering more practicality without compromising on the Thar’s off-road heritage. While the Roxx shares several traits with its smaller sibling, the list of differences is substantial. So, we break down the key distinctions between the Thar Roxx and the 3-door Thar across dimensions, features, performance, and pricing.

One of the most significant differences between the Mahindra Thar Roxx and the 3-door Thar lies in their size. The Thar Roxx’s larger dimensions provide it with a more spacious cabin and better road presence.
Mahindra Thar Roxx | Mahindra Thar | |
---|---|---|
Length | 4428 mm | 3985 mm |
Width | 1870 mm | 1820 mm |
Height | 1923 mm | 1844-1855 mm |
Wheelbase | 2850 mm | 2450 mm |
The Thar Roxx is 443 mm longer, 50 mm wider, and up to 79 mm taller than the 3-door Thar. However, the standout difference is the wheelbase – 400 mm longer in the Thar Roxx – which translates to better interior space and ride stability. The Thar Roxx also offers a generous boot space of 644 liters, a significant upgrade over the near-non-existent boot in the 3-door variant.
While both variants carry the unmistakable Thar design language, the Roxx introduces several changes. The 5-door version’s added length and extra doors provide more practicality, while the angular design of the C-pillar enhances the SUV’s visual appeal. The Thar Roxx comes equipped with LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs, a more robust bumper, and larger 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels compared to the 3-door’s 18-inch wheels. The rear design features new LED taillamps that complement the overall modernised appearance of the Roxx.
The Thar Roxx aims to offer a more refined and feature-rich cabin than the utilitarian 3-door version. The Roxx adopts a 5-seater configuration, as opposed to the 3-door’s 4-seat setup. The Roxx uses soft-touch materials, leatherette seat covers, and even includes a panoramic sunroof, setting it apart from the standard Thar’s more basic interior. The Roxx comes equipped with ventilated front seats, powered driver seat, wireless phone charger, and door-mounted window controls.
It also boasts a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital 10.25-inch instrument cluster, compared to the 7-inch unit in the 3-door. Additional features exclusive to the Roxx include a 360-degree camera with blind-view monitoring and a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) – a first for the Thar lineup.
The Mahindra Thar 3-door variant is available with three engine options: a 1.5-litre CRDe diesel, a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel, and a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, while the 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines offer both manual and automatic gearbox options. In contrast, the newly launched Thar Roxx features two engine choices: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel, both of which are available with either manual or automatic transmissions.
Engine | 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mStallion | 2.2-litre turbo diesel mHawk |
Displacement | 1997 cc | 2179 cc |
Max Power | 160 bhp/174 bhp/ 150 bhp | 150 bhp/172 bhp |
Peak Torque | 330 Nm/380 Nm/330 Nm | 330 Nm/ 370 Nm |
Transmission | 6-Speed MT/6-Speed AT | 6-Speed MT/6-Speed AT |
Drivetrain | RWD & 4WD | RWD & 4WD |
In terms of drivetrain, the 3-door Thar offers a Manual Shift Part-Time 4x4 system with high and low-range options across all variants except those powered by the 1.5-litre diesel engine. The Thar Roxx, on the other hand, limits its 4x4 availability to specific diesel variants, namely the MX5 (manual), AX5L (automatic), and AX7L (available in both manual and automatic). This approach aligns with Mahindra’s strategy for the Scorpio N, offering the 4x4 system only on select higher trims.
