According to the country's largest carmaker, the system is expected to improve the use of renewable energy generated at the facility while reducing wastage of surplus solar power.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. on Wednesday announced the commissioning of a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana, in a bid to strengthen the use of renewable energy across its operations. The automaker had installed a 20 MWp solar power project at the facility in 2025.

While the solar plant continues to generate electricity during factory holidays, the power remains unused due to the absence of demand.

The newly commissioned battery energy storage system is designed to address this gap by storing excess electricity generated during periods of low demand, including plant shutdowns and holidays, and making it available for use when required.

“Maruti Suzuki is strongly aligned with India’s focus on building self-reliant energy ecosystems. The introduction of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at our Kharkhoda facility is part of these continued efforts. With a lifecycle of about 15 years, BESS will help to reduce nearly 54 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually,” Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said in a statement.

“Going forward, our production volumes will increase from current levels. Despite this, we remain committed to lower Scope 1 & 2 emissions* not only in terms of CO2 intensity but also in absolute CO2 emission in manufacturing. Our approach is in line with our parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation’s environmental vision, which has set an intermediate target to reduce Scope 1 & 2 CO2 emissions by 42% by FY 2030-31 compared to FY 2022-23,” he added.

According to the country's largest carmaker, the system is expected to improve the use of renewable energy generated at the facility while reducing wastage of surplus solar power.

In addition to storing excess renewable energy, the BESS is also expected to support grid stability within the manufacturing facility.

As part of a pilot initiative, the battery energy storage system has been integrated with the Kharkhoda plant's internal electricity distribution network. Maruti Suzuki said the project forms part of its broader efforts to build a greener energy ecosystem and improve the sustainability of its manufacturing operations.
