India’s numero uno car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki announced a major production milestone day. Cumulative production of Maruti Suzuki cars from its India manufacturing facilities crossed the 3 crore milestone. It took the brand just six years and five months to go from 2 crore units to 3 crore units. Moreover, the manufacturing plants in Gurugram (Haryana) and Hansalpur (Gujarat), were also the fastest among the Suzuki production bases around the world to achieve this major feat - which was 40 years and 4 months.
”To fulfill customer demand and aspirations, we plan to invest further and increase our annual production capacity to 4 million units by FY 2030-31. Working towards this, we will set up two new green field manufacturing plants of 10 lakh capacity each at Kharkhoda-Haryana and Gujarat,” revealed Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India.
Being the oldest of the two, the Gurugram facility also posted the highest cumulative production at 2.68 crore. Followed by the Gujarat plant that has till now produced 32 lakh vehicles. The historic and iconic Maruti M800 contributed to this milestone with 29 lakh units of the sub-compact hatchback being produced. But India’s favourite, the Maruti Suzuki Alto continues to hold the baton for maximum production with 50.59 lakh units of the car manufactured till now. This is followed by the Maruti Suzuki Swift with 31.93 lakh units produced. Slotted below the M800 in fourth spot is the Maruti Suzuki WagonR with 31.84 lakh units of the car produced.
Apart from domestic consumption, Maruti Suzuki export models f are also manufactured in these two plants. Before the five-door Jimny was launched in India, the three-door Jimny was being manufactured at the brand’s Gurugram plant for SouthEast Asia and the Australian market. In fact, Maruti Suzuki commenced exports from India way back in 1987 and contributes to around 40% of the car exports from our country.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki exports to 100 countries. In the domestic market, Maruti Suzuki currently has over 18 models for sale, sold via its NEXA, Arena, and Commercial retail channels.
